NEW HERITAGE TRAIL FOR HOLMFIRTH

Holmfirth has a new town centre heritage trail for those who enjoy a walk laced with history.

Windows on the Past, a circular walk that takes around an hour, includes landmarks such as the former railway station and church lock up (prison), as well as the site of the annual ‘Sing’ and the old stomping ground of Fenella the tiger.

Anne Bacon, chair of Holmfirth Conservation Group (HCG), said :- For the last year the group have been working hard on carrying out an appraisal of all the buildings in Holmfirth Conservation Area. She added: It was while carrying out this work that we realised the wealth of cultural heritage the town has. Rather than keep it to ourselves we decided to devise a new heritage walk for all to appreciate. Including a tableau of buildings, parks and personalities – and of course the special and spectacular views.”

The new interpretation board, located near the Owd Genn monument on Towngate, was officially opened as part of the Heritage Open Days initiative on September 10 th . This was followed by a rendition of the Holmfirth Anthem, Pratty Flowers. The 35 people who joined the walks that followed were also treated to a rare peek at the church lock up known as the Towser and which is only opened once a year.

Ms Bacon added: “We now invite visitors, whether local or from afar to come and enjoy Holmfirth with a new eye.C All can read much more about Holmfirth’s heritage and the trail by visiting HCGs website, www.holmfirthconservation.org. An accompanying free leaflet can be downloaded or picked up at the Holmfirth and Huddersfield Libraries as well as at Huddersfield railway station
