Huddersfield Literature Festival 2017

4th March

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 12:00am, repeating until 19th March 2017

The Huddersfield Literature Festival (HLF) is an annual literary festival that takes place over 10 days in March in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.
The festival runs author talks, creative writing classes and competitions, multi-arts events, LGBT events, performance poetry and open mic events, plus an Literary Afternoon Tea and Majikkon (the annual Huddersfield Anime/Manga and Comic Con).
The next Huddersfield Literature Festival will run from 4–19 March 2017 with a theme of ‘Courage’.
Events take place at a number of venues around Huddersfield; many are free or low cost and are largely held in accessible venues. Some events will have live subtitling by Stagetext to give deaf, deafened and hard of hearing audiences access to the event.
Since its inception in 2006, the Huddersfield Literature Festival has provided innovative and high-profile events to support and showcase both established and new, emerging writers and performers, as well as offering the opportunity to attend workshops and masterclasses.

The Festival is a not-for-profit organisation based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire; funding is sourced from ticket sales, grants and sponsorship. Festival patrons are Lemn Sissay MBE and Sir Patrick Stewart OBE.

Aims and objectives
1. To celebrate the written word by bringing big name authors to Huddersfield and supporting local talent.
2. To promote Huddersfield as a cultural centre to rival others, not only in West Yorkshire but UK-wide.
3. To bring people and revenue into the town centre for multi-venue events and encourage spending in the town centre (shops, bars, restaurants).
4. To provide access to events for those who might not normally attend because of financial or social issues or for reasons such as disability.

New for 2017, the Courage Is Poetry Project, supported by Kirklees Council and Huddersfield District Committee. The project is part of a campaign to increase footfall in Huddersfield Town Centre and celebrate local creative voices.

Poems inspired by our theme of ‘Courage’ will be displayed in shops and businesses across Huddersfield in February and March. Competition entries
